Carbon Fiber Rear Spoiler Installation Guide: 3M Tape, Factory Screws & GT Wings

A rear spoiler is the easiest carbon fiber part to install — and the easiest to lose on the highway if you rush it. Most of our spoilers mount with 3M VHB tape alone and take under 30 minutes. Our GT wings are a different job entirely: they bolt through the trunk lid on gooseneck uprights, and yes, that means drilling.

As the manufacturer, we test-fit every spoiler on the actual vehicle before it ships. This guide covers both worlds: tape-mounted lip spoilers and ducktails, and bolted GT wings, with the same steps our engineers use.

Check your package: if it contains gooseneck uprights, sleeve spacers and a drill bit, you have a GT wing — skip to Method B.

Tools & Prep (Both Methods)

  • Isopropyl alcohol or acetone, clean microfiber cloths
  • Painter’s tape for marking alignment
  • A heat gun in cold weather — 3M tape bonds best above 15 °C / 59 °F
  • A friend to hold the spoiler while you check alignment
  • GT wings only: power drill and center punch
  • GT wings only: rust-proof paint for the drilled edges

Full prep rules — cleaning, test fitting, temperature — are in our general installation guide. The short version: clean, dry-fit, mark, then commit.

Method A: Tape-Mounted Lip Spoilers & Ducktails

This is how most of our spoilers mount, e.g. the BMW F92/F93 M8 rear spoiler: 3M VHB 4910 tape (10 mm) along the full contact edge — no drilling, no screws.

  • Dry-fit the spoiler on the trunk edge. Check left-right symmetry and mark both ends with painter’s tape.
  • Clean the contact surface with alcohol or acetone and let it dry completely.
  • Apply the included primer inside the tape contact zone only. ⚠️ Surface primer can dull or scratch visible paint if you spread it wide.
  • Peel the tape backing slightly outward — pull a small tab of film to the outside at each end, don’t remove it yet. Set the spoiler on your alignment marks.
  • Once the fit is perfect, pull the film tabs out completely while pressing the spoiler down from the center outward, 30–60 seconds of firm pressure per section.
  • Do not open the trunk for 24 hours if the spoiler sits on the trunk edge — the tape needs undisturbed curing time.

Some designs add 2 factory-position M6×16 screws at the ends (e.g. our Ford Mustang GT wing) — same procedure, plus drive the two screws after taping. Snug, not tight.

Method B: Bolted GT Wings (Gooseneck, Drilling Required)

GT wings — like our G80 M3 / G82 M4 GT wing — carry real downforce loads, so they bolt through the trunk lid on aluminum gooseneck uprights. This installation is irreversible: you will drill holes in the trunk lid.

The procedure:

  • Position the supplied locator on the trunk lid and mark the hole positions. Double-check left-right symmetry before anything touches metal.
  • Drill the trunk lid with the included drill bit. Touch up the bare metal edges with rust-proof paint and let it dry.
  • Mount the gooseneck bases to the trunk lid (M8×50 screws + sleeves). Note: the M8 hardware replaces the original trunk nuts; a street-spec M6 option exists — confirm your preference when ordering.
  • Assemble the side plates to the wing blade (M6×25 screws + M6×12×1.5 gaskets).
  • Mount the wing assembly onto the gooseneck uprights, align the holes, then torque all bolts evenly.
  • Open and close the trunk slowly to confirm clearance, then re-check bolt torque after the first drive.

Honest advice: the drilling step is where DIY installs go wrong. If you have never drilled a body panel, a body shop charges about an hour of labor for this — cheap insurance on a trunk lid.

The 5 Mistakes That Ruin Spoiler Installs

  • Skipping the alcohol wipe — tape will not bond to wax or dust. This is the number one cause of spoilers lifting.
  • Peeling all the backing before positioning — use the pull-tab method: tabs out, position, then peel while pressing.
  • Opening the trunk within 24 hours — the trunk flexes and breaks the uncured bond.
  • Drilling a GT wing without the locator — freehand holes almost never line up with the bases.
  • Skipping rust-proofing on drilled edges — bare steel under a bolt will rust within a season.

After Installation

  • 24–72 hours: no car washes, no rain driving if avoidable, no highway speeds. VHB tape reaches full strength in this window.
  • Tape-mounted spoilers: check the edges monthly and re-press early if a corner lifts.
  • GT wings: re-torque the upright bolts after the first week, then every few months.
  • Automatic car washes with brushes can catch a spoiler edge — hand wash or touchless only.

FAQs

Yes — when the surface is cleaned, primed and fully cured. 3M VHB 4910 is the same tape OEMs use for exterior trim. The failures we see are almost always prep failures, not tape failures.

No, if removed correctly: heat the tape with a hair dryer, cut the bond with fishing line, and roll off the residue. The primer stays inside the contact zone and does not harm clear coat.

Yes. Gooseneck GT wings carry downforce loads that tape cannot hold. The good news: the holes are under the bases, invisible once installed, and our kits include the positioning locator and drill bit.

If you are comfortable drilling a body panel and own a torque wrench, yes. Otherwise we recommend a body shop — the install is about an hour of professional labor.

Stop before peeling any tape or drilling any hole. Send us photos of the fitment plus your model and year — our team checks every case, and manufacturing deviations are covered by our after-sales policy. See how we guarantee fitment.

Plenty — most bolt-on and stick-on carbon parts are DIY-friendly with basic tools. Popular next installs after this one: Rear Diffuser, Hood, Mirror Cover installation guides. All of them follow the same prep rules in our general installation guide.
