Carbon Fiber Mirror Cover Installation Guide: Clip-On Caps & Stick-On Covers

Mirror covers are the smallest carbon fiber parts we make — and the quickest win. Fifteen minutes per side, no jacking, no wiring. But they have a reputation for one thing: broken mirror clips. Almost every broken clip comes from the same move — prying in the wrong direction. This guide shows you the right one.

As the manufacturer, we produce two designs: full replacement caps that unclip and replace the OEM mirror cap, and stick-on covers that bond over it with 3M tape. Here is how both install, the same way our engineers do it.

Hold the part up to your mirror: if it is a full shell with clip rails inside, it is a replacement cap. If it is a thin skin that matches the cap’s outer surface only, it is a stick-on cover.

Tools & Prep (Both Designs)

  • Plastic trim removal tool — the thin, wide type
  • Isopropyl alcohol, clean microfiber cloths
  • Painter’s tape (alignment marks for stick-on covers)
  • A heat gun or hair dryer — warming the cap softens clips and tape adhesive
  • Work above 15 °C / 59 °F; cold plastic clips snap

Full prep rules — cleaning, test fitting, temperature — are in our general installation guide.

Method A: Replacement Caps (Clip-On)

  • Fold the mirror inward toward the window to open a gap at the outer edge.
  • Warm the OEM cap with a hair dryer for 30–60 seconds — warm clips flex instead of snapping.
  • Insert the trim tool at the bottom edge of the cap and lift gently until the first clip releases. Then work along the edge. Never pry from the top or the mirror-glass side.
  • Pull the cap straight off — outward, away from the mirror housing. Twisting is what breaks clips.
  • Test-fit the carbon cap: align the clip rails, press until every clip clicks. Work from one end to the other, then press the full perimeter.
  • Fold the mirror back and forth once to confirm nothing binds, and check the cap gap is even all around.

Method B: Stick-On Covers (3M Tape)

  • Dry-fit the cover and mark alignment with painter’s tape at two corners.
  • Clean the OEM cap with alcohol and let it dry; apply the included primer inside the tape zone only. ⚠️ Surface primer can dull or scratch visible paint if you spread it wide.
  • Peel the backing slightly outward at each end — tabs out, don’t remove yet. Set the cover on your marks.
  • When the fit is perfect, pull the tabs while pressing from the center outward, 30–60 seconds of firm pressure.
  • Fold the mirror in and out to confirm clearance at the housing edge.

The 5 Mistakes That Ruin Mirror Cover Installs

  • Prying with a metal screwdriver — it gouges the housing and still breaks the clip. Plastic trim tool only.
  • Prying from the top edge — clips release from the bottom/outer edge on most cars. Check your model’s clip direction before the first pull.
  • Working cold — below 15 °C, OEM clips are brittle and 3M tape will not bond. Warm the cap first.
  • Skipping the dry-fit on stick-on covers — VHB tape grabs on first contact. There is no second positioning.
  • Forgetting the fold test — a cover that rubs the housing when the mirror folds will lift its tape edge within weeks.

After Installation

  • 24–72 hours: no car washes or highway speeds while tape cures (stick-on covers).
  • Avoid high-pressure washer jets aimed at the cap edge.
  • Replacement caps: re-press the perimeter after the first week — clips settle.
  • Clean with pH-neutral shampoo only; solvent cleaners haze the clear coat.

FAQs

No. The indicators live in the mirror housing or glass, not in the cap. Our caps and covers keep every factory opening clear — if your OEM cap has a puddle lamp window, the carbon version has the matching cutout.

Clip-on replacement caps look OEM-plus and can come off later without trace; stick-on covers are faster and work even if your OEM clips are already broken. Both are secure at highway speed when installed per this guide.

Yes: warm it with a hair dryer, saw through the tape with fishing line, and roll off the residue. The OEM cap underneath is unharmed.

No — neither design requires touching the glass. If your mirror glass is heated or auto-dimming, it stays connected and untouched throughout.

Stop before forcing anything. Send us photos of the fitment plus your model and year — mirror caps vary by trim and production month, and our team checks every case. Manufacturing deviations are covered by our after-sales policy. See how we guarantee fitment.

Plenty — most bolt-on and stick-on carbon parts are DIY-friendly with basic tools. Popular next installs after this one: Grille, Interior Trim, Side Skirts installation guides. All of them follow the same prep rules in our general installation guide.
