Carbon Fiber Front Lip Installation Guide: Factory Screws, 3M Tape & Race Kits

A front lip is the single most popular carbon fiber upgrade — and the one most often installed wrong. The two failure modes we see from customers: tape-only installs that peel at highway speed, and overtightened screws that crack the flange around the mounting holes.

As the manufacturer, we test-fit every front lip on the actual vehicle before it ships. This guide is the same procedure our engineers follow, covering both designs we produce: standard add-on lips (factory screw points + 3M tape) and multi-piece race lips (bumper-off, metal brackets, lower spoiler plate).

Check your package: if it contains metal brackets and long M10 bolts, you have a race kit — skip to Method B.

Tools & Prep (Both Methods)

  • Isopropyl alcohol or acetone, clean microfiber cloths
  • Painter’s tape for marking alignment
  • Socket/ratchet set or a power driver (low torque setting)
  • Jack stands or ramps (you need access under the bumper)
  • A heat gun in cold weather — 3M tape bonds best above 15 °C / 59 °F
  • A friend. A front lip is a two-person part.

Full prep rules — cleaning, test fitting, temperature — are in our general installation guide. The short version: clean, dry-fit, mark, then commit.

Method A: Standard Add-On Front Lip (Factory Screws + Tape)

This is how most of our lips mount, e.g. the BMW F92/F93 M8 lip: 12 factory-position M6×16 screws along the bottom, 3M VHB 4910 tape (10 mm) sealing the top edge.

  • Remove the factory bolts at the left and right mounting points under the bumper. Keep them — some are reused.
  • Dry-fit the lip. Hold it in place, check left-right symmetry and gap consistency, mark alignment with painter’s tape. Temporarily fasten two factory bolts to hold the position.
  • Clean the contact surface with alcohol or acetone where the tape will sit.
  • Apply the included primer to the body surface. ⚠️ Apply it only inside the tape contact zone — surface primer can dull or scratch visible paint if you spread it wide.
  • Peel the tape backing section by section — never all at once. Press from the center outward, 30–60 seconds of firm pressure per section.
  • Drive the screws at the designated points, starting center and working outward. Snug, not tight — overtightening cracks carbon around the hole.

Method B: Multi-Piece Race Lip (Bumper Removal + Brackets)

Race kits — like our G80 M3 / G82 M4 race front lip — replace the aero structure under the bumper, not just the look. The upper lip, lower spoiler plate, and wind knives each mount separately.

What’s in the box (typical BOM):

Component

Qty

Hardware

Qty

Upper front lip

1

M6×60 screws

6

Lower spoiler plate

1

M10×1.5×110 hex bolts

2

Wind knives

2

M6 nuts + M6×2×24 gaskets

6 + 12

Metal brackets

2

M6×35 screws

2

3M tape / adhesive sealant

1 set

The procedure:

  • Remove the front bumper and the OEM chassis undertray.
  • Remove the left and right air-inlet linings — this gives access to fit the metal brackets.
  • Install both metal brackets (M6×60 screws, M6 nuts, M6×2×24 gaskets), then restore the air-inlet linings.
  • Reinstall the front bumper. Add the fixing screws at the left and right ends under the chassis.
  • Install the upper lip with 3M tape or adhesive sealant — clean the contact surface first, exactly as in Method A.
  • Install the lower spoiler plate with the M10×1.5×110 hex bolts, M10 gaskets and nuts.
  • Bolt the wind knives to both sides of the lower plate (M6×12 bolts).

Honest advice: if you have never removed a bumper, this is the one to hand to a body shop. Bumper clips break easily, and the bracket alignment decides whether the whole kit sits straight.

The 5 Mistakes That Ruin Front Lip Installs

  • Tape-only on a lip that has screw points. Tape seals; screws carry load. Highway air pressure will find the difference.
  • Spreading primer outside the tape zone. It can scratch or dull visible paint — mask the area first.
  • Peeling all the tape backing at once. You lose the ability to correct alignment. Section by section.
  • Overtightening screws. Carbon cracks around the hole before it feels “tight.” Snug is enough.
  • Skipping the dry-fit on a race kit. Brackets bolted in the wrong position mean the upper lip, lower plate and wind knives all fight each other.

After Installation

  • 24–72 hours: no car washes, no rain driving if avoidable, no highway speeds. The VHB tape reaches full strength during this window.
  • Check screw tension and tape edges after the first week, then monthly.
  • Ground clearance: a front lip typically sits 20–40 mm lower than the bumper. Learn your new approach angle before the first steep driveway.

FAQs

For standard add-on lips, no — they mount to factory points under the bumper. Multi-piece race kits with metal brackets do require bumper removal.

No. The screws use the bumper’s existing factory holes or the plastic underside — nothing visible is drilled, and the points are hidden once installed.

Yes for tape-mounted edges — it is what makes 3M VHB bond to painted surfaces long-term. Just keep it inside the tape contact zone, because surface primer can scratch or dull exposed paint.

Technically yes for small lips, but we rate every front lip as a two-person job. One person holds alignment, the other fastens. It is the difference between centered and crooked.

Plenty — most bolt-on and stick-on carbon parts are DIY-friendly with basic tools. Popular next installs after this one: Rear Diffuser, Side Skirts, Canards installation guides. All of them follow the same prep rules in our general installation guide.
