Carbon Fiber Prototyping: Timeline, Cost, and Our 58-Day Development Process

“How long until I can hold the first sample?” It is the first question every custom client asks — and the answer most suppliers avoid giving clearly.

At JC AUTOCARBON, we give you a number up front: for most standard custom projects, the first sample is ready in about 58 days after your design data is confirmed. Here is exactly where those days go, what can change the timeline, and what a prototype costs.

Where the 58 Days Go

The 58-day clock starts after design drawings are confirmed — design and confirmation time before that is separate. The three stages:

Stage 1: CNC Master Tooling — 15–20 Days

We CNC-machine the master tooling from your confirmed 3D data. Machining time depends on part size and complexity — a mirror cover is days, a full bumper is longer.

Stage 2: Production Mold Cloning — 20–25 Days

From the master, we build the production mold. This is the tool your parts will actually come out of, so we take the time to get surface and dimensions right.

Stage 3: Sample Production — 15–20 Days

Layup, curing, trimming, surface finishing, and inspection. The finished sample goes through dimensional checks and, where possible, trial fitting before we send it to you.

Can Every Project Finish in 58 Days?

Most prototypes and low-volume molds can be completed in 45–58 days. Some projects need more time:

  • Extremely complex structures or multi-part assemblies
  • Very tight, aerospace-level tolerances
  • Multiple revision rounds after the first sample

We always confirm a realistic schedule before production begins — a promise we can keep beats a fast number we cannot.

What Do I Need to Provide to Start?

Any one of these is enough to begin:

  • A stable, undeformed physical sample we can 3D scan
  • 2D/3D files — STP, STL, or IGS
  • Your own prototype — a hand-made model or 3D print

It also helps to tell us your functional requirements, material preference, tolerance expectations, and how the part will be used. Our engineers then run an internal review, choose the best process route, and estimate your development time, sample date, production capacity, and delivery schedule.

How Do You Keep Quality During the Rush?

A fast timeline only matters if the sample is right. Every stage includes quality gates:

  • Manufacturability review before tooling
  • Layup and curing simulation before production
  • Dimensional inspection against your CAD data
  • First-article report with measurements and photos
  • Final QC with professional measuring tools

What Does a Carbon Fiber Prototype Cost?

Prototype cost depends on part size, mold type, material, and process. A small trim piece on a rapid prototype mold costs far less than a full bumper on CNC aluminum tooling. As a rough guide:

  • Rapid prototype molds — lowest cost, for validation and low volumes
  • CNC aluminum molds — mid-range, for medium volumes and better surfaces
  • Steel molds (P20) — higher cost, for high-volume or high-precision programs

We quote each project individually after reviewing your data — and for many projects, development fees can be credited against future bulk orders.
